Got a question? We've got answers! Here are our answers to some of the most commonly asked underbody, performance and 4WD modification questions.
How does a differential work?
The differential is a device that splits the engine torque two ways, allowing each axle to spin at different speeds.
Can I fit a spool to my street car?
In most states it is illegal to run a spool in a road registered vehicle. Why? See “how differentials work".
Can I make my 2 piece tail shaft into a single piece assembly?
Car manufacturers fit 2 piece tail shafts for two reasons, driveline angles and tail shaft rpm. See "tail shaft advice"
What is ride height?
The way the vehicle will sit on the ground when the suspension is fully loaded.
Should I buy a new crown wheel and pinion or have my old set lapped?
Traditionally gear lapping was a finishing process for new crown wheel and pinion gears to remove any variances in gear profile, shape and smoothness before fitment to differential assemblies.
However, due to the cost of new replacement items, gear lapping has proven to be a cost effective means of repairing worn crown wheel and pinion gear sets.
Gear lapping is a process in which a worn crown wheel and pinion is reshaped and finished in a lapping machine under load to manufacturer's specifications. Whilst gear lapping is a cost effective means of repair, lapping can reduce the life of a gear set depending upon the amount of wear and can also produce a speed related period noise, but the process will correct any variances in gear wear.
Note- Excessive wear caused by pitting of the gear tooth face and/or case hardening loss cannot be connected by the lapping process and is deemed unrepairable. If you have any further questions relating to the gear lapping process please contact us.
